The number one pick in the NFL Draft. A pick that could change the future. The pick that teams need to contend again. The pick that could either save the franchise, or the pick that could be the biggest disappointment in NFL HISTORY.
This year, the all so valuable number one pick belongs to the Arizona Cardinals.
There is a lot of speculation that they will draft Kyler Murray, the electrifying Quarterback out of Oklahoma. He would pair perfectly with Kliff Kingsburry, their new head coach. However, this would be a very controversial pick, as the Cardinals selected a QB in the top 10 in last year’s draft, Josh Rosen.
And while Josh Rosen did struggle in his rookie year with Arizona, he still showed flashes of being one of the league’s better Quarterbacks later in his career. Also, any rookie QB would’ve struggled in Arizona’s mess of an offensive system. Yes, Kyler would fit perfectly in Arizona, however that doesn’t necessarily mean they should give up on Josh Rosen. Analysts should stop thinking about whether or not Arizona drafts Kyler, and start thinking about what will happen if they keep Josh Rosen.
There are two possibilities we are going to explore, Option A: Arizona keeps Josh Rosen, and Option B: Arizona Drafts Kyler Murray. Option A, Keep Josh Rosen In this scenario, the Cardinals realize that Josh Rosen had a terrible O-Line and was in a offensive system that was laughable. They keep Rosen, and draft Quinnen Williams. The Cardinals need D-line men and Quinnen Williams is not only the best player in the draft, but he is also a beast at DT. They will use their second-round pick to draft Dalton Risner, the talented O-lineman out of Kansas State. Part of the reason Rosen struggled so heavily was because of the lack of talent on the O-line. Bringing in Risner could play a huge part in the Cardinals coming back to playoff contention.
In the third round they will draft a WR, such as Andy Isabella, to add to the receiving core that already features Christian Kirk and Larry Fitzgerald. In Rounds 4-7 the Cardinals should continue to build depth ad the O-line and build a better linebacker core. (Especially with the departure of Deone Bucannon.)
Option A allows the Cardinals to develop their young QB, while also filling their holes on the roster. Plus they add Quinnen Williams, a blue chip defensive player and potential superstar.
Option B, Draft Kyler Murray Kyler Murray will fit perfectly in Kliff Kingsburry’s offense. His mobility paired with his arm talent should terrorize defenses across the league. The Cardinals then ship off Josh Rosen to the Giants in exchange for the #17 overall pick, giving the Giants a young QB for the future. Draft Jawaan Taylor with the #17 overall pick, giving the Cardinals a starting Right Tackle for years to come. Use your second-round pick on Hollywood Brown, Kyler Murrays favorite target at Oklahoma.
The one constant between option A and option B is that in both drafts, you want to use your later round picks on O-Line depth and improving your linebacker core. Option B allows the Cardinals to get their QB of their dreams in Kyler Murray and get a lot of other important pieces for the future such as Jawaan Taylor and Hollywood Brown. No matter what direction the Cardinals decide to go in, one thing is for sure: The future is bright in Arizona.
